Celebrating over 44 years of support for genealogical research

The objective of the Aurora Genealogical Society of Colorado is:

To promote an interest in genealogy.

To encourage high standards of genealogy research through

instruction in careful documentation and preservation of data.

To publish genealogical and historical information in a regular

newsletter and any other publications as directed by the Board of Directors.

The Aurora Genealogical Society of Colorado started with a handful of individuals with a desire to do and learn more about genealogy, and to share what they knew with others.

Organized in March of 1981 with 52 charter members, the Aurora Genealogical Society of Colorado has assisted countless individuals with research into their roots for 44 years.

Genealogy at the time was done via paper, pen, books, libraries, repositories, archives, and anywhere else one could visit or write to for information.

Over the years genealogy advanced into the computer age where computers could be used for spreadsheets and genealogical stand-alone programs to aid research and record keeping.

Ahh, but along came the internet, the world opened up with information to be gathered and shared, and queries posted and answered.

Again, advancements in technology would bring the world closer with more information and usher in online communication where people from all over the world could communicate via email or in person via zoom, web-x, webinars, and so much more. Information was now quickly at one’s fingertips and could now be more readily shared.

The 21st century has brought vast amounts of genealogical and historical information through sites such as FamilySearch, Ancestry, My Heritage, Find My Past, American Ancestors, Find A Grave, Billion Graves, Newspapers.com. With so many on-line resources, where could one possibly start? It seems so much more is available at our fingertips than ever before. No longer does one have to wait weeks or months to learn and or discover information about an ancestor – the links of communication and sharing seem endless.

The Aurora Genealogical Society of Colorado kept pace through the years, growing right along with all the new and wonderful changes. Membership in the society provides a way to share and to learn from each other. Members aid the community by promoting an interest in genealogy through classes and assisting with research. The genealogical education provided by the society encourages high standards of genealogical research, careful documentation, and preservation of records. If you think about it, we are an important part of preserving Family History.

So, what else has happened since the birth of the Aurora Genealogical Society of Colorado? We have contributed much of our time, talents, and fund raising to support other genealogical societies and our local Aurora History Museum.  In addition, we have supported:

The society meets eight times a year and at each meeting we have a presentation of genealogical interest. The Aurora Genealogical Society of Colorado currently provides assistance to the public once a month at the Aurora Central Library through their Adult Learning program. We assist attendees with creating their family tree, and four times a year we offer beginner as well as advanced classes. Our meetings and monthly classes are held at the Aurora Public Library Hoffman Heights Branch at 1298 Peoria Street, Aurora, Colorado 80011.

The Aurora Genealogical Society of Colorado is an active part of the Aurora community and we welcome anyone that is seeking assistance with the genealogical research.
